I think I'm going to start tipping 7-10% on the wine capped at $75-100 per bottle. I've probably spent thousands tipping 20% on wine. When I'm with clients I feel like I have to if one of them is sitting close enough to see that but other than that new policy forthcoming.

I'm not usually having that expensive of wine but on the food portion I tip the same as I would have with cash.

Hi bayou, you do understand why I use cash? As a former restaurant guy I know what it is to get a cash tip vs a cc tip.. It means allot more to the server if you give cash. It helps them immensely.

Yes that's what I do too if it is an expensive bottle. $100 per bottle and then 25% of the food.

Oh absolutely. I try to give the tip in cash if I have it on me. But what I was meaning is I tip on comped meals the same as if I had to pay for it myself regardless if I'm paying by charging to my room, card or cold hard cash.

How do you guys feel about tipping at gourmet food trucks? I'm only asking because they've started to include the option to automatically pick if you want to pay 15, 20, 25, even 30 percent when you pay with a credit card. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I ask because I spent $40 at a food truck today on food that hasn't even been consumed because the person I was going to eat it with was supposed to come by at 5 and now it's looking like he'll be by at 11pm. Well that's not really the point..but the point is 20 percent is $10. I don't see how they expect that considering that I don't even get offered a glass of water or somewhere to sit

    Opinions?

In Vegas, I cash tip 20 - 25%. My room charges are comped, but not my gratuities. At home, if I'm paying by credit card, I'll add the tip onto the credit card. This also is easier for expenses and income tax returns.
I've heard that in California, servers, generally do not pay tax on cash tips. So, cash tipping make sense.

For take out, handing me a coffee over the counter, food truck, I will tip $1 - $5. I won't tip a percentage like it was a restaurant where I was served at a table. They are two entirely different things.

I do not tip for fast food which is what that is. Just better ingredients (hopefully). I find the tipping option there obnoxious.

I tip on take out only at my usual places where I know the server and see him/her regularly.

But just a couple of bucks, not 20%.
