Luckily many of our "older" Pinots are peaking so we can make a hit on those and replenish. The optimal window here appears to be 5-8 years, generally speaking.

 

My parents have a wall of wine in their basement, I find it fun to go on the hunt for the dinner wine of the night and scope out what they have.

 

Some people I know bought a tear down. During the demo they discovered an underground wine room. Apparently the family of the decedents didn't think about what happens when a place goes vacant and the utils are shut off, and for several years stuff cooked and cooked and cooked. The estimate of the value of the wine lost runs from well into six-figures to likely seven. That they didn't get it out in the first place is as mind-numbing.

 

So serious question. I'm really liking the flavor of some of the ruby ports I'm finding around town. Why are they so much cheaper than vintage or tawny ports.

In March, we are going to L'Atelier. We go every time in Vegas. However, over the years, we have had mixed success with the sommelier. Because of what we typically order, the preference is red. However, my wife does not like full body reds and so we tend to order pinot noir. Any recommendations for something up to $500?
