I live in . I hear what you're saying and I do appreciate you both sharing your points of view with me.

I fear keeping wine in my cellar for 10 or 20 years only to open with anticipation and find I've stored vinegar for all of those years and be let down. I would like the odds to be in my favor if I'm going to put that much time into something.

    A couple of quick thoughts.
First, join Cellar Tracker.com, it is a huge wine community web site where members can create an inventory of their cellars, and put in current tasting notes which all other members can see. This is like getting realtime information on how a particular wine is drinking, to help you decide if you want to open a prized bottle or not.
Second, for wines less than 7 years, get an aerator, they really work well to oxygenate wines and softens them up. Alternatively, you can decant the wine the night before you drink it, this works well also.
Third, it's your palate, and the more you taste, the more you will find out what you like. So sample as much as you can...just like women!

Oh the dreaded wine hangover - gives me the chills. The hangover goes away better wines? I'm going to check around for Navarro.

I've sampled my fair share and have come to realize I prefer the Californian and Asian varietals. Oh, are we still talking about wine?

    Thanks for the cellartracker tip.

I admire your restraint. lol But, yes, you've earned it, get every dime you can, and that's one hell of a great way to try to balance the sheet. And remember, we're drinking one of those Harlans together.

Price creep is a problem with wine. And not the snooty, I'm gonna buy that just because type. But the more broadly you taste, the more things change. I guess with us and the lesser wines is they might pass as a drinker, but start bringing good food into the mix and wowza. Our problem now as you may have noticed -- not that it's really a problem, per se -- is too much micro. We're loading up around here which is understandable but there's a big wine world out there. Now I could be a happy man drinking that Hilliard Bruce SRH Pinot over and over and over. Then what am I missing? Like you we buy some put-away wines every year -- typically the highest end stuff from an HB or Brewer or whomever, some Napa Cabs. Our intention with those still is to drink them sooner rather than later.

BTW, that '80 Mouton was for shit. ;) What a fucking crime that was, eh?!

Absolutely. I drink an entire bottle of La Tache all the time and have never had a hangover.

A glass and a half of the grocery store variety and I'm in hell the next morning.

Nice! I always thought hangover free wine was a myth. I have enjoyed some wines but I'm always saddled with a blindingly bad headache the next day.

I looked up La Tache '97 - wow! I think I'll be enjoying my hangovers a little longer haha.
