I tip each day a certain amount but if they
do something special - I tip more. A few times I
have gotten some extras so I tip more during those times.

I always put up a DND sign for the length of my stay and will scrounge for extra shampoo or soap or towels if I see an unattended cart during the middle of the day. Then at the end of the stay I leave at tip of $10 per day. I figure it was my choice to not have him/her do a job they're required to do and for which i would have tipped them, so I shouldn't deprive them of their tip simply because I choose not to have them do their job. Make sense? it does to me, so I don't really care if you agree or not. LOL

For most tipped positions, if I review all the service I've received in my life I could give you a breakdown on who had the best and worst service. Waiters, dealers, etc. There is a continuum of good and bad service.

Every housekeeping cleanup I've ever had would be in a multi-way tie for both first and last place. I bet some of them were nicer, some worked harder, were more thorough, and some just went through the paces. But I could not for the life of me tell you which was which because I was not there. Unless something is glaringly wrong or you see them face to face, it is a blank slate.

I am simply going off prior conversations about this which seemed to indicate otherwise.

No worries. I know from long experience with these threads that I am in the minority (or at least the minority among people who reply).

And FWIW I am not arguing that people should not tip. Any generosity you want to give to anyone ... good for you. I simply never got how this became a 'tipped' job as it feels to me very unlike other ones.

WTF?? A tipping thread? Okay, I leave $5.00 per day, except the last day, when they become someone else's problem.

Just as with tipping dealers, let's look at how much time is spent per room...
I would guess that it's about 20 minutes.
A $3 tip constitutes an additional $9/hour, or an additional 50% of their wage rate...
If we were to use the old food tipping guidelines of 15-to-20%, that would be:
    1/3 of $17/hour = $5.67 x 20% = $1.13 tip per room, per day.
The housekeeper would make about $3.33 per hour in tips...or $26 a day, on top of the $136 they make per day in wages...so, 19% in tip income.
If their employer thinks that services are worth $17/hour, assuming NO tips, then tipping 19% of that is pretty generous in the overall scheme of things.

A $5 tip? That's a nearly 100% tip based on their wage rate of $5.66 per room. A $20 tip? You're paying them more than the hotel does for cleaning 3 rooms!

That's gross but I'm sure it happens.

You sure you still want to tip $1.13 a day? If so, I hope you use a new toothbrush every day

I'm sure that I'll keep tipping what I've been tipping for many years!
I'm just saying that there's really not a justification for hotel housekeeping to expect more than $1.13 per room, per day.
The reality is that it's very likely that their total tips are probably closer to that $1.13 per room average because of those who do not tip at all.
So, my $5 helps to bring their average per-room tip amount up.
I just don't think they should expect more than about $3 or $4 an hour in tips, overall.

Does anyone ever think that leaving a tip would create better overall vibes and bring more luck to us when gambling?

I'm going to say this, being generous makes for good karma. I truly believe this.
