Uber sends you through the tunnel a lot of the time going to the strip from the airport. That got me thinking why don't the cab companies charge a flat rate from airport to hotel, so then they can take the quickest route. If cabs shorten each ride by 5 minutes they will get three or four more rides a shift earning them more money. I am sure the cab companies know what the average fare is from the airport to Bellagio. Why not just charge that and speed up the process.

Long hauling is a problem, or else why would they have all those advisory signs up at the airport. This will eliminate that and make cabs more money. Could this work?

because it makes too much sense, and they can't long haul you that way................

I was just talking to the Wynn limo driver on the way back to the airport the other day, and he said he cracks up when guests complain that he is long-hauling them in a comped limo ride, lol

because cab companies are not going for the quickest route, they want the longest route.

They've actually proposed legislation such as this and the cab companies shot it down.

"Representatives from Frias Transportation Group and Yellow-Checker-Star, two of the valley’s biggest cab companies, testified Tuesday that a flat-rate fare system would be unfair to drivers, taxi companies and customers."

I like when I go to cities like Denver and Indy and it is a flat rate from the airport to downtown

They actually used to have "zones" in DC and it was awful. No one knew the zones except the cabbies and so they could charge you whatever they wanted and you'd have no recourse. You'd have to negotiate upfront to go over the river into Virginia. Otherwise, you were really screwed. No meter and they could REALLY stick it to you.

They went to a fare system and it got a lot better.

    Then we got Uber.

I certainly could never get behind legislation. But I do wonder if it might actually make sense for the industry to institute a flat rate plan (assuming the ride sharing services continue to gain share and the legislators stay off their back).

New Orleans has a flat rate for airport to the CBD or French Quarter which is where most tourists stay any way. This helps cut down on the hustling of the tourists which will happen a dozen more times during their stay.
