On a more serious note, I get a little antsy when strangers ask me this, particularly in confined spaces. I always lie if I am winning. Am I going to tell some greaseball mook in an elevator that I just paid for my entire trip with a Royal Flush and the cash is in my pocket?

    Hell no.

    Note.

I have never actually had occasion to lie to the confined spaces mooks.

The simple answer, I guess, is that up or down is the only genuine data point for "winning" here in the literal term. Of course, given the black-letter-law that is the cliche "The House always wins," you wonder why people would still gamble ... or why people would buy a $300 wine rated 92 points when there is a $20 wine that's also 92 points ... but people still do it. So there must be something more, right? There's the entertainment, the enduring high of a particularly thrilling or big win, tilting ... so many factors.

This is why I say that, no matter how much I lose, my goal simply is to feel like I've "won" because of those intangibles -- have I felt like I've had fun, etc. So far? I'm way up.
