Shit late to the game here, but I-80 through Wyoming would have been better at night. Straighter, and 80 mph limits through much of the state. Just made that trip last month, but I had to stop in Ogden to pick up a dog - even still it wasn't much longer than going though Colorado. You can cut the corner and skip the SLC metro. Might be worth giving that route a go on the way home if you're driving at night again. It looks way farther on paper, but according to google its only about 45 mi. longer through Wyoming due to all of the twisting and turning through the stoner state.

Loveland pass is a fun drive in the summer (when it's light and you can see). I've driven it in a blizzard just before it's been closed due to conditions. Talk about white knuckling it....

Good luck on the rest of the drive.
