The thing with Laughlin is there is no there there. Forget the river, a one-off trip to Oatman, a few golf courses; it's just not a destination. It is a gambling outpost, and a tired one at that. Nothing wrong with gambling outposts, but Reno, Vegas, Tahoe are vacation destinations with casinos. And that isn't coming from someone who showed up once and turned up his nose. I started going to Laughlin well before Vegas, I've been there a good 25 times or so, and now more than 20 years after the first visit the one word that applies today is the one that also applied many years ago: Tired.

I agree with both suggestions. It has to look appealing, and it would be best to have places where, if you're sitting at one place.. you think.. that place looks kinda cool..so you head to the next spot... you get some foot traffic going, you get people feeling more safe.

And then the good citizens of Reno could abandon it all to the homeless like Crazy Portland is doing!

build around the ballpark (behind Harrah's)

I think the Tesla plant will help, and maybe pretty quickly. If they can get some of the youngin's living downtown, that influx of money would immediately kickstart a resurgence.

I read that some of the people trying to "save" those blighted motels near Circus Circus want to turn that into low-income housing. That should be the LAST thing that Reno should do. They already have a panhandling problem in the area... low income housing would bring more people of low-housing to the area and make the problem worse.

I agree...you don't revive an aged downtown by making it a low income community. it needs to be a destination and it needs to bring in people with money.

Ugh. Don't tell me that! I'm 3rd wheeling it with friends who have a wedding on the coast next month, but I'm hanging in Portland instead. Already moved from the Embassy to the Downtown Courtyard because of location. Still expect to walk and explore what Downtown has to offer on a weekend, although it appears many of the carts are closed on weekends.

PDX is awesome. Weird politics but, hey, that's really just something with which the locals must deal ... except for those who followed the $$$- and brain-drain to the Evergreen State. Food, setting, parks, people, beer, art ... great town.

Oh, and I was in Reno this past weekend and also failed to make it to the ballpark. I did walk the 2 miles along the river to Idlewild Park on Friday for Food Truck Friday. I got there at 5 when it started and it had grown to a good sized crowd before I left. Free music and entertainment for the kiddies. A couple of misses foodwise, including a "brisket" sandwich which was a mushy, wet mess. Those people had obviously never been to Texas.
