VP is my latest addiction and I have had some amazing hits in the relatively short time I have been playing it. It has also introduced a bad habit for me though...playing too long. Unfortunately, this has spilled over to slots too. I used to take stabs on slots, or was able to do a set predetermined number of spins and then cash out and walk away. Since playing VP, I have found myself abandoning all discipline and end up pressing buttons for far too long. Too many times, I have accumulated enough credits on a VP machine with a value higher than what a handpay would be...just to play it down to zero. I do loving hitting those AWAKs though!

I like it for the free drinks at the bartops, and the ability to play as fast or as slow as I want to. Lift Bar at Aria is a great place to get comped premium cocktails and chill out for a bit while gambling and watching TV. Plus, I like Lift Bar in particular because I've been able to build up relationships with the bartenders there, so they always remember me and make sure I'm taken good care of. As far as results, I'm probably a little bit in the red over the life of my VP career, but I've lost way less than I have at BJ/craps.

I looked at your trip reports to try to get an idea of what you were playing. I saw 94.8% Deuces Wild, and 96.8% (8/5) Double Double Bonus. Those percentages assume optimal strategy. Actual return for most players is lower.

Video poker can be a really good choice, but it's a skill game, requiring careful attention to both machine selection and playing strategy. For example, 99.7% Deuces Wild is widely available throughout Las Vegas, but typically you have to go away from the Strip to find it.

The payback percentages aren't that important if you are only playing a hundred bucks or so that's a hand full of extra plays you will get. If you are playing for 8 hours grinding away it will add up but a short session isn't that important in my opinion. Your still hunting quads and a royal.

I play it because everybody else is doing it.

Similar to Ken, it's kinda like a mindless machine game with some thought required. To me it's the moment you actually get a premium hand...that's what keeps me playing. I don't play a ton, but I will push a few hundred through.

Last trip In June, I was on fremont street and I told my brother and cousins we should get a drink somewhere...my brother said let's just go to the casino, play a bit and get a drink there.... that was the worst $100 drink I've ever had. But the allure of a good hand popping up at any moment, that's what kept me frantically pushing those buttons.

Better drink service than slots and the money goes slower.

If I only play for 15 minutes once in my life, then I agree. But if I continue playing bad games badly, my results will add up to a lot of wasted money IMO.

I look at VP play as a long progression. I have losing sessions, I have break even sessions, I have winning sessions. Not a one of those does anything pro/con relative to the EV of the game.

One of the nice things about VP is you have a choice as to whether to play a "bad" game -- or how "bad" of a game -- and while casino lockdowns on better platforms over the past decade-plus has limited what is available, you still know and have a choice. Or greater import is that as a player you can perfect or at least better you contribution to reaching that EV through a practice tutorial ... and not always playing hammered or otherwise distracted.
