First time I went to Vegas with my wife we were set to leave the room the first morning there for a day sightseeing. My wife said to leave a tip on the bed for housekeeping. I put $2 on the bed and my wife let me have it (in a partly loving way)..

She told me that these people have kids and expenses like everyone else and they rely on tips just to survive... She asked me if I would bust my ass for a lousy $2 tip????

Since then I learned my lesson and tip generously....

How about you? Do you tip housekeeping? Do you consider that they rely on these tips too?

I recommend tipping daily instead of at end of your stay because it may not be the same person cleaning the room every day.

Yep, we tip the housekeeper for their normal services and then extra if we ask for something out of the way. I try and leave a tip each day in the event there is a different housekeeper over several days.

I tip housekeeping every day... but I see nothing wrong at all with your $2 tip... I typically leave $5 (a bill or a red chip), but if the only small change I have is two $1s,? Guess what? It's a $2 tip for that day.

Glad to see you are importing all the old VMB arguments lol.

Historically I have not tipped housekeeping. Never even occurred to me until I saw the first of many VMB threads on it.

Generally now, I still don't tip but also leave up the DND. I don't much care about getting my room cleaned, and still find it bizarre to tip someone with no face to face interaction and whose service I can't really evaluate. My understanding is also that while they don't make a lot in the grand scheme of things, they are not among the staff whose salaries are lower based on an expectation of tips.

Yes! I typically stay in the Skylofts which comes with Butler service, so we tip the butler on the way in, and then during the trip if we have special requests or they go out of their way to do something special for us.

I usually tip at the end of the stay.

FYI saw this posted on another site.

"In Nevada the state's minimum wage is $8.25/hr.

In Las Vegas, Culinary Union Local 226 housekeepers in the hotel/casinos earn $13.87/hr as a starting wage.

After they complete probation, it goes to $17.34/hr — and they also get the usual union benefits, such as healthcare, paid vacations, pension contributions from the employer, etc.

    Per: Wanda Henry

    Culinary Workers Union
    1630 South Commerce St.
    Las Vegas, NV. 89102

    whenry@culinaryunion226.org "

$17+ benefits isn't that bad for a job that doesn't have a education requirement

You can't evaluate the fact that your room is cleaned? Why about the fact that your room is cleaner, towels are refreshed, trash is taken out etc.... Seems pretty easy to evaluate.

Not meaning to pick on you Nevyn as we definitely have some similarities. I too leave the DND in the door since I don't really have a need for housekeeping. I keep my room very clean (since I'm barely in it).

Usually, I'll see a housekeeping cart in the hallway during the day. At some point during the middle of the trip, I'll find her and ask for a few fresh towels. For this I'll give a $5 in exchange for handing me a few towels - they're always appreciative. At the end of the stay, I'll always leave a $10 on the bed.

I feel this is adequate considering there is no mess to clean up and they can turn the room over quickly.

I leave a twenty every day per room. They usually leave extra stuff and always thank me if they meet me. I terrify my Asian friends into tipping more by saying if you don't tip they use your toiletries on their ass...
