Actually, this area of aviation IS my area expertise!

    1. Convective weather and airplanes don't mix well... it's not the rain, it's more the wind gust, shear, etc that accompany the rain.
    2. Flight delays on the ground are preferable because it's cheaper and safer for the airlines.
    3. Delays imposed are by the FAA, not by the airlines.

That's a nasty looking line-storm. You don't want to fly through that bad boy and they airlines won't route around it... it's too large and will cost too much money. Though you might get lucky and have any opening toward CVG.

You'll get out eventually. Good luck!

Here's some national airspace system info that might help settle your nerves.

Thanks for the info. Ha...My nerves are ok...i'm at the point of annoyance now. I fly every week so I always get the potential of nonsense but I thought it would be fun to have a common place to share their anger stories.

I'm going to post a picture of my flight pattern from DTW-ALB that happend about 2 months ago that has been the worse flight I've ever been on. We were flying an Airbus A330 and the sheer force of the turbulence was making the engines and wings whine loud enough for me to hear/feel through my Bose cancelling headphones. We flew above Montrefuckingal to turn back. It was stupid!!!

I'd rather drive from DTW to Columbus than fly to CVG then drive to Columbus

You got my curiosity piqued....what is your expertise? You an aviation specialist? You have your pilot license? Weatherman? :)

    That doesn't sound fun.

That appears to be a reroute... and a long one at that.

Once that storm got east of DTW, they were basically forced to route around (or cancel!).

I think the pilots and towers were just making shit up as they went along for that flight.

Flying over the Rockies during winter and even the nonsense turbulence you can get out of LAS hasn't compared to that flight. It was not something I want to repeat

I work at company that does meteorology consulting for the FAA.

But, I'm not a meteorologist. We mainly do programs / projects dedicated to helping mitigate the effects of weather on air traffic.

My former job was at a company that wrote software for the FAA that imposed delay on flights. There, I did several things, but ultimately I ended up writing software for the airlines to help manage delay imposed on their flight schedules that were the result of the software written by the other portion of the same company :).
