We vegged out to Apollo 13 last night. It was a reminder to how quickly we "bored" of going to the moon.

But we did it. We set to get there and we did.

That would never happen in today's America. Sad. Truly sad.

Great point Ken... we watched The Martian a few weeks ago and no way would we have our crap together to go back and save Matt Damon. And accepting help from China to get it done... HA... we'd sure turn that into a political football!!!

I'm not sure "got bored" is the right way to look at it.

What would be the point of continually going? The human race thrives on innovation, not stagnation.

From the moon came the space shuttle, came the space station, came Mars rover.

I'm guessing you mean the audience got bored? Same thing applies and you can only really get excited about something the first time you see it.

There was a decided cultural ennui here if not with Apollo 12, then those right after. As 13 reminded us, it only became something when they might've died. I watched 11 with my granddad, who was an AEF pilot in WWI. He died a week later. What that man experienced in his life, aeronautically ... phew.

This all happened in under 10 years, too, let's remember, with amazingly bad technology at hand. Every program runs it's course, it is just striking that perhaps the greatest human adventure since, well, ever, became old news so quickly.

And the point remains that we couldn't do something of similar magnitude today. We can't even pave our fucking roads.

It's not that stuff like this isn't still happening, it's just that we are desensitized to it. We sent a robot to Mars and I barely remember seeing it on the news. We're sending a person there soon, where's the coverage? We have little electronic encyclopedias in our pockets called smartphones that we can view porn on anywhere anytime. We have electric cars. We continue to advance but no one gives a shit. It's just not a big deal anymore. The Prozac generation is desensitized to everything and it also makes a difference there are about a million options what you can watch on tv compared to the 2 or 3 options you had when Apollo was launched.

That's all building-block stuff, the inevitable explosion in technology and capability. I'm simply speaking to a call from the U.S. President to do something OUT there and to get it done so timely. Ain't. Happening. Again.
