    Trips to Vegas:
    50
so I made a solo trip at the Beau Saturday->Sunday to pick up 2 months of promo chips. I decided only to stay only one night for some personal reasons I couldn't be away for that long. the trip actually started off pretty well finding a good parking spot, breezing through pre-check security and at the gate in record time. traveling on Saturday is always great. I never bother to buy first class on these flights because I always get upgraded with my status and it saves some extra comps on the backend, so it works out better for me. this time was no different and I was upgraded easily. the only issue was thunderstorms in the area meant we had to sit on the runway for an hour before being able to take off. oh well.

got to the Beau and everything went smoothly. I've had the same suite now 3 trips in a row, so I think they have it coded to me or something. I like it, so that's fine by me. I got changed and headed down to pick up my promos and play a little. they changed the location of the Bacc tables again, which is good because the last place they had them was right on a major narrow walkway area and it was too busy. plus they added 1 more table, so they have 3 mini and 3 midi now. still nothing like Vegas, but a lot better than the days when they only had 1 midi table and if it wasn't going well there, you were screwed.

put my promos into play and won the first hand ... then lost the next 4 and they were gone. so I bring out 5k and it's going ok for a little while, but then hit a bad patch and that's gone too. not a good start. since the flight was late I didn't have that much time before dinner, so I decided to cut my losses and get some food. met up with a buddy who also happened to be in town and had dinner with him and his GF. I had a chilled king crab leg to start, the 28 day dry aged NY strip for dinner and the grand marnier soufflé with crème anglais for desert. also had a bottle of the 2010 Hirsch Vineyards Pinot Noir, which I really like.

after dinner I met up with Tellafriend who was also in town. he wanted to play at the Bacc table in the HL room. that table is rarely open and every time I've played there I've gotten completely slaughtered, so I was very hesitant. but he convinced me to give it a shot, so I acquiesced. turned out to be the best decision of the trip.

sat down with 5k and proceeded to start cautiously. after the bad session earlier and my previous terrible luck at that table, I was in no mood to bet big. but as the shoe went on, we started to win some bets and get a little mojo going. pretty soon the table started to fill up and we were playing with several other people. I don't usually like to play at a full table, but these guys were pretty good in the sense that there weren't any of those idiot contrarians who always bet against the table no matter what. for the most part everybody bet on the same side and we started to get some table momentum going.

player won a few in a row and pretty soon I was pressing. still small, but wins of 2500, 3500, 4500, 5500, 6500, 7500 ... adds up pretty quick. another buddy that I knew from before came up and joined us and every hand we won, we high fived and jumped up and down like little school girls and bumped chests. it was crude, but effective because by the time the streak broke, player had won 12 in a row and I had pressed up to 8500. of course it sucks to lose your biggest bet, but that's how it goes when you press. what sucks is just 1 or 2 more in a row would have doubled my total win on that streak since I had gotten the bets up so high at that point. but I still had picked up a nice chunk of change on that streak and was well back into the black for the trip.

after that streak, we started to pick up some other nice patterns in the shoe. banker would always jump after a natural win. banker never won more than 2 in a row. stuff like that. pretty soon I was back to my usual ways slamming 5-10k on every hand. it was a bit choppy, but I was at least holding steady not losing more than 2 in a row at any time. then player won another 6 in a row and that helped. by the time I decided to quit I had gotten back the 5k from earlier and was up 50k for the trip. I was getting tired and that was a very nice win for just 1 shoe, so I made the decision to lock it in and hit the sack since I had an early tee time in the morning.

I only got about 4 hours of sleep and then had to get up to get to the golf course. it's 630am and I look at my phone and the weather says "78 degrees, feels like 91". i'm like WTF how can it feel like 91 before the sun has even come up? sure enough I get outside and it's already muggier and hotter than hell. get to the course and have my favorite breakfast of breakfast burritos and a spicy bloody mary. Fallen Oak is famous for their house-made bloody mary mix.

I hit the range and was striping it, so I only hit about 10 balls. if figured if I'm already hitting it this well, no sense in wearing myself out. so I get out on the course and tee off. first tee ball I top it 20 yards. tee up another one and top it 30 yards. wtf? my normal miss off the tee when I'm not playing well is a low bleeder to the right, but never a top. tee up a third one and not great, but at least get off the tee. well the first 4 holes are pretty poor and I'm 4 over after 4. then we get to the 5th, the number 1 handicap 488 yard par 4 with water on the left. I hit a pretty decent drive, but it's really wet so the ball is just plugging in the fairway. I still have 230 left to the hole. I hit my 5-hybrid and put a good swing on it and put it pin-high 30 feet right. get up to the green and knock it in for birdie. that always feels good.

after that I settled down and played really well. I managed to post a 38 on the front nine after another birdie and no more bogeys, which i was happy with after starting 4 over. then I made 2 more birdies on the back and just 1 bogey and found myself just 1 over through 14. with 4 holes left I know i have a pretty solid chance to make a couple more birdies and post an under-par round, which I haven't done in years. well, not really, but i'm going to ignore the 2 i topped off the first tee.

so i hit a solid drive off 15, a 600 yard par 5, but it bounced 1 yard too far left and into a deep lie in the rough. i try to advance it, but i don't carry the cross bunker and i'm screwed. i chunk my approach shot and struggle to a 7. well there goes my chances to post under-par, but i still have a chance to post a good score. well, once again i hit a good drive on 16, but it goes 1 yard too far right and into another deep lie and i can't reach the green and there's another bogey. these are the 2 easy holes coming in too. 17 is a 240 yard par 3 and 18 is a 495 yard par 4, the signature hole.

on 17 i hit my hybrid again and end up just left of the green. hit a pretty good chip-shot and manage to make the 8 footer for par. get to 18 and stripe my best drive of the day, but still with no roll in the fairway, i still have 215 left. i hit a little draw with my 3 iron, almost perfect, but yet again, 1 yard too far right (actually 6 inches) and it hangs up in the rough instead of kicking left onto the green. but i hit a great chip shot from there and drain the 4 footer for par and a 76. well, a 76 after the first 2 shots i duffed off the first tee anyway.

either way that's a good score for me from 7600 yards when it's playing even longer with the ball plugging in the fairway. and to make it better, playing by myself with my caddie, I finished in just over 2 hours and can get back to the casino.

since my flight leaves soon, I have no interest in getting in deep and risking losing my big winner from the night before, so i just pick up my promo chips for Sept and play with those. i start out really slow because my goal is just to try to turn them into a few thousand in cash and go buy my wife something nice. unfortunately, this was the worst decision of the trip!

the shoe was absolutely perfect. i got in about half way, but early on in the shoe there were 6 ties in a row. 6 ties! i had never seen anything like that before. i had never seen more than 3 ties in a row. then banker ran and then it chopped, but it was a pretty shoe. pretty soon banker started to run again, so i jumped on. but i was only betting 500, 1k, 1500, etc since i was playing slow. well banker proceeds to win 20 out of 23 hands and how much do i make? 10k. ok 10k is nothing to scoff at, but if i had been playing my normal level, that would have been 75-100k easy. i don't think I've ever walked away with a 10k winner and been more pissed in my life. but i was able to go buy my wife something nice, so my goal was achieved. guess the moral of the story is i should have set a bigger goal!

so overall it was a great trip, had a ton of fun and raped the Beau yet again. that's 3 big wins in a row for me there. but i was due for some good luck there after they slaughtered me there trip after trip a few years back. after these 3 trips, i keep wondering if the next time i call, they say sorry they're full, lol.

I found it funny to re-read this comment.

this was very nearly the last time I ever went to the Beau.

this trip put me up lifetime on them after being down huge from my first trip there.

I went back for quick trips in Oct and Nov that year, but didn't play much. and they really did stop calling me.

they only just called me last month for the first time in years to invite me to the Master's trip this year.
