I've had to pay resort fees at hotels that were in the middle of nowhere (attending a conference). I've seen them all over, for years. The majority of hotels (outside of Vegas and not restricted to large cities) also charge a parking fee (regardless if it is selfpark or valet).

Actually it's more like a dictatorship to force companies in to a certain business model to "protect" the citizens.

One of the staples of a free market economy is caveat emptor.

Wig, I'm specifically asking about a tax that is ever-present; there ain't a city/county I know of that doesn't levy it, and yet no one is freaking out about it. And it can be sizable, north of 20 percent in many places. Sure, everyone likely knows "plus tax(es)" but do you know what that means in real costs in Vegas vs. Miami vs. Palm Springs? Shouldn't this, too, be disclosed as more than "plus tax(es)"?

Yes, the "hotel" taxes. So a private entity charging a "secret" 20 percent big is unanticipated and unacceptable but the City of VacationLand adding 20 percent for the "hotel" tax and five percent for the CVA fee and two percent for the PR/advertising budget is OK?

I'm just asking, when transparency rules, should these (often times several) public exactions get the same treatment as the "resort fee"?

And shifter even posting on a resort fee thread.......it is a whole new world over here.

On a side note if I were to win the contest, can I use the food comp at Ellis Island and would you (shifter) join me for one of the their primo steaks? Maybe Ken could hook us up with a cupin.

You guys are also missing the fact that resort fees at lower end properties can exceed 100% of the room rate - not 20%. This is common at places downtown, and Excalibur on the strip. This hurts the people at the lower end the most. I guess that's why I have such a visceral reaction to stuff like this - I've seen enough of the poor getting taken advantage of by large corporations out in the real world. One of the businesses I have owned during my career created software for payday loan companies. I got out of it because I didn't want to feel like a scumbag anymore. I don't need to see this stuff going on in Vegas too.
