Pack, the only proviso I'd add to apt stat statement is don't try to be what you're not. Aspiration and desperation are not the same thing.

Ken, when I was growing up,
you know, we had to "live off the
fat of the land", so to speak.
Fuck, it was tough but all is good now!

Ok...... I agree. I also believe that goes without saying. That was very insightful!

I once had a three hour business meeting with Michael Jordan. As a matter of pure happenstance, a few weeks prior to the meeting, I had played at the Mansion across the walkway from a group of tables where he and Tiger Woods were playing blackjack at one table, and Charles Barkley at another right across from them. I mentioned this to him during a lull in the meeting while we were waiting for his money manager to do some things, and we got to talking blackjack. He immediately lit up, apparently happy that he had found another gambler to talk to.

He told me he had been trying to teach Tiger how to play. He also said "oh, you should have come over and said hi" at the Mansion. At that moment, and during a few others, I realized that he does not really understand the bubble that he lives in - I'm fairly certain that it would not have gone well for me had I approached them. He was very down-to-earth for the most part, and as we bonded over talk of our experiences in casinos, I thought for a fleeting moment that I might actually become friends with this guy. But then, reality set in, and I remembered who I was talking to, and even the rigorous steps we had to go through just to setup the initial phone call that led to the meeting (for example, his cell phone number is changed every few weeks....even family and friends have to call his assistant to get the new one). Yep, definitely someone out of my league, not necessarily to do business with but certainly to be friends with/hanging out with.

Today, I've had enough life experience, and met enough other people that were of similar stature, at least financially, to actually say "I could be friends with someone like that". But to hang out with people like that and actually enjoy it, you definitely need to be secure with yourself and your place in life.

MJ might be a nice guy IRL, but on the golf course he can be an asshat

Fish that might be the only good story I've ever heard about MJ on or off the golf course.

But just because of that, next time I see him at Shadow I will go up and say hi. I'll let you know how it goes for me.

It's funny..because he was sitting across from us, the dealer told me that she had dealt to him a number of times and that he was kind of an asshole. When this happened, the meeting was already set, so that made me uncomfortable going into the meeting....I don't do well with people that are overly arrogant or are just assholes, and had he been that way the meeting would have gone very badly. The woman that setup the meeting for me had previously run one of his charities though, and she told me that he could be a handful but was overall a pretty nice guy. So I had very mixed information, but was generally convinced that he was going to be a jerk.

I think maybe he is only nice to people that he sees as successful themselves, or maybe he just liked me because I'm a fellow gambling degenerate. I can only speak to my experience, but I was pleasantly surprised at my interaction with him.
