So, I'm in the market for a new laptop for grad school. For some reason I'm really high on these multi-function laptops, like the Microsoft Surface Book or the Lenovo Yoga series. Though I want it to be more of a laptop and less of a tablet.

Was wondering if anyone had experience with either of those. Seems like the Surface Book is too much laptop and I'm not sure the Yoga 900 is enough laptop.

Here's the specs on what I really want in a laptop: Core i7 processor, a GPU, and at least 8GB of memory. 13-15in display and pretty thin and lightweight.

Anyone have any recent experience with buying a laptop or have any input on these multi-function laptops?

Apparently, according to the school, many of the faculty and students use Macs, but it seems their system is setup for PC and they require everyone to have MS Office suite on the laptops.

So, while I read most of the few pages of instructions that it takes to get a Mac setup, it seems that if I'm starting from scratch, I may as well go with something that integrates easily rather than trying to get my Mac to operate as a Windows machine right off the bat.

I recently got a Surface Pro. It's fast and I can have all the apps that I need for work on it. The best part is that is small and light and easy to take on vacay with me. The con is that the screen is fairly small......and I have "middle age eyes".

I stay away from Dell. The company I used to work for did a ton of business with them and I've learned you can't trust their products or their support.

Of course, that's probably changed in the past few years, but it's left a dirty taste in my mouth.

Totally get it. When I went to law school, things worked the same way.

The Surface Pro 4 was what I originally set out to buy. But, after I realized that it's primary function was to be a tablet rather than a laptop, I decided against it. That's why I started looking at the Surface Book instead.

I think I'm just going to order the Lenovo Yoga 900. I just had a conversation with a friend of mine who is a real techie and he said that he was looking at them over the weekend and that he's probably going to pull the trigger on one this week.

Our whole sales staff moved to Surface Pro 3/4. I have had both and was very apprehensive at first as I thought it was more a tablet .... I have been pleasantly surprised and love it. Great to travel with and much easier to use on a plane but in the office, I have the dock and driving 2 24" monitors. I also added a 200G MicroSD card and have no issues. (I originally added external memory through a usb drive but it was killing the battery life)
