That's because you're playing at CET casinos. They pay double on 2 and 12 at most tables.

Most of the rest of the world pay 3x for a 12 on the field.

 

on a good table the 12 is 3x and the 2 is 2x. sometimes it's vice versa and they pay 3x on the 2 instead.

bad tables have 2x on both.

 

When did this change though? It used to all be x2?

 

MILF casinos and most downtown have always been 3x on the 12. I think it is mostly CET that has 2x on the 12

so approx. 4.93% of all craps rolls are the seven hitting on the come-out roll.

 

Yes, although people will probably also dismiss this advice in the name of fun, you really shouldn't play the field at all, but especially on any table that pays 2x on both 2 and 12. It increases the house edge from 2.78% to 5.56%. That's higher than the edge on double zero roulette.

 

Of course everybody can and will play whatever bets they want. At a table you would never hear me say any of this. I would be right there with you giving you a high five when you hit your hard 4, even with its 11.11% edge, or your 12 with its 13.89% edge. If I saw you playing roulette, I'd be cheering for a 17 or 20. But here in a forum, where the topic is the pros and cons of the iron cross, all I was doing is pointing out the mathematical problems with it.

Personally, I never have more fun at a craps table than when I have managed to get don't bets with full odds against every number, then a 7 comes out and I win it all at once. It's similar to betting a hardway (and in fact you can have much more wagered in total on that than you would ever be allowed to bet on a hardway), but without the enormous long-term cost. That's more than enough excitement for me.

 

Why does the come out roll matter with the Iron Cross strategy?

I've always been under the impression that when playing the Iron Cross, you sit out the come out roll and wait for a point to be set. Then jump on the 5, 6, 8 and FIELD.

The one Iron Cross variant that I've seen successfully employed has been going a bit heavier on the 6 & 8. So, e.g., if you are at a $10 table playing basic Iron Cross, you'd have $12 on the 6&8 and profit $2 each time they are thrown. The variation I saw one guy using had him putting $24 on the 6&8 but keeping just the $10 on the FIELD so he had a $14 profit each time one of them was thrown. Strangely, however, he kept $10 on the 5. Not sure if my numbers are 100% correct but the general idea is.
