    Trips to Vegas:
    11
So my wife comes home from work one day last week saying one of her co-workers wanted to swap days off around so now she has Fri - Tues off and asks if we should do anything! Naw, let's stay home and hope it doesn't snow, right?? So after some quick pleading with my bosses for a couple of days off, we're off to four nights in a 1 Bdr suite at HGVC Flamingo...Woo Hoo!!!!

We've got an o-dark-thirty takeoff to land in Vegas about 9am Friday and leave about 9 am on Tues. No big planning for this trip, will probably hit Cosmo hard for a day or two and see what kind of offers we can generate, visit the BeeJay memorial row at Aria as it treated me well as time (and avoid Cleopatra on the way out!), and just generally run amok without any kind of direction for four days. Oh, maybe drink. Looking forward to warmer weather and a nice, unexpected break!!

I'll try another live TR, really enjoyed doing the last one, but the kids aren't going so it may be kinda boring.

    Gotta love no-notice vacations!

Ugh...this is way too early to be going to the airport. I wouldn't even be going to bed yet in Vegas!! I better get some sleep on the jet

Got here half an hour early, probably will waste that waiting on a gate!

Wow, nice surprise the room is ready at 9:30 in the am! Unpack, then off to Cosmo, me thinks

Pretty expensive, almost wiped out my points! Worth it tho

New carpet going in and some changes by Bond bar

I like the feel of Cosmo's new sportsbook

Well 6 whiskey sours in and buffalo is stampeding me. I guess $20 per drink isn't too bad really!

Leaving Cosmo down about $500 between the two of us. No hits on anything, good drinks tho!

Chicken chimichanga at Hecho in MGM. Good, but huge. No way to eat it all

Calling it a nite. Old man on east coast time

Up early, trying to stay on east coast time so the mid-week return doesn't result in whiplash and keyboard imprints in my forehead at work on Wed

I'm guessing her plans did not survive contact with slots and free drinks. She doesn't even remember which machine she hit it on! But hey, that puts us up for day one

    Pleasant morning at the habitat

It appears the only way I will improve my drinks to losses ratio is to increase the alcohol consumption...so I must sacrifice in the name of economy

Learning DDBP on a penny machine in Paris while drinking Irish whiskey. Any chance of this ending well?

So winning 800 credits is kind of a rush, even when it's only pennies

Paris, meh, down a bit. Fair trade for the Jameson. On to Aria

    Dammit

Ok, so despite what the women on this board would say, bigger isn't better. Just donked off a couple of hundred on the big VP games in Aria

    Geez, Aria is killing me!!

Just turned $90 of free play into $100 of real money at Cosmo. That helps ease the pain

    So this really doesn't suck

PS. Glad that some VMBer had success on them, but I will be back. Maybe not this trip, but...

Heading north today, maybe I'll take some of the money Sheldon has been holding for me since last trip

No change in fortune at Mirage. If I make Mlife gold this year the damn card better be real gold after all we've dropped in MGM casinos this trip!

    Escapee from the habitat

Had enough for the evening, 1am back home and only one day left in Vegas. Need a massive comeback tomorrow to just see even from here. You gotta bet big to win big, right?

Nope, that won't happen, I don't have the intestinal fortitude of some of my brothers and sisters on the board. No running up to the room to get another brick to continue the martingale for me!

Still a winning trip in my book. Perfect weather, nice break from back east, and having a lot of fun!

Just realized we forgot to eat dinner! Guess that makes Mon Ami Gabi a must for breakfast

He was selling something, handing out cards. I didn't get too close, can you imagine if they were porn slapper cards with people with hair like that...could really hurt

Oh, and will someone, someday please post a pic of getting a royal on that damn oversized DSTP machine in Aria???!!!!

I promised a short wrap, so here goes! Well, not so much a wrap as some random musings and general observations. It’s interesting to reflect and see what you may have learned on a visit, including things you learn about yourself!

Man, STP is crack…DSTP is even more addictive! Although it ate my lunch, dinner, and several after dinner drinks, I really enjoyed that machine in Aria. I guess size does matter.

I did discover I don’t care that much for higher volatility games, both VP and slots, which surprises me. I’m not sure if it’s that I’m not comfortable with the strategies, but I find even on the slots, I don’t like going spin after spin without getting something. Guess I’m more of the instant gratification type! I like getting bonuses fairly often, even with reduced payouts.

Has anyone seen the math on if multiplay/spin poker increases or decreases variance? I could see it either way. More hands played should smooth it out, but they’re not independent tries as you start from the base hand.

Despite my preferences for low volatility, I enjoyed DaVinci’s Diamonds. I suppose games like Bejeweled are similar, but it was fun when the matching items dissolved and new ones fell into place.

I also finally realized that I am truly a casino hopper. There are several I really like, but I just can’t sit still for more than a couple of hours. I started playing at Cosmo and intended to hit it hard for a day. Even though we like it there a lot, we were ready to move on after about three hours. Just not enough different stuff or different looks I guess. But wow, are the drinks good! Good pay tables too. I don’t think I could generate enough play there to get descent comps though.

This was the first trip we played a lot in Aria and besides the DSTP machine we really enjoyed it. Upscale, but not too pretentious. We’ll be back and I’m taking that machine down! Cocktail service was spotty, seemed to depend on where you were in the casino, some areas had better coverage and it didn’t seem to correlate with the denomination. Good drinks. Lemongrass was fantastic, great flavors, but watch the heat! Aria Café was nothing to write home about. Average food, especially for the price. Glad Aria is part of Mlife, so I can still hop around. I always enjoy MGM and Bellagio, even though Bellagio had downgraded the pay tables at the sportsbook. Still some ok games and where else can you get Guinness for breakfast?!

First time at Treasure Island too, but I doubt I’ll go back. Casnio is a bit dingy and they can’t seem to decide who they are. It doesn’t embrace the pirate theme, Gilly’s and Senior Frogs seem just kind of random add-ons and looked average at best. Just all kind of jumbled together. Cocktail service was poor, but really good pay tables for mirco-rollers.

First trip to Wynn/Encore as well. Beautiful properties! I preferred Wynn by quite a bit, Encore is just a little too sedate for my tastes. Didn’t eat at either, but enjoyed the casinos. Wouldn’t mind staying a night or two to get a better feel for them.

We didn’t spend much time in any CET property this trip, not out of malice, just wanted to try new places. Can’t believe I didn’t get to TAG and sample beers…so unlike me!

Venetian/Palazzo is still my favorite resort by far. Just enjoy the vibe in both casinos; great places to eat from food court to the five-star level, solid drink service, etc. And, um, yeah, Delmonico’s whisky list. Fabulous rooms. Funny, I like Venetian a bit better, but always seem to win more at Palazzo. Palazzo just seriously downgraded their VP by taking out the All-Star II games between the HL table salon and the Champagne Bar, so the good pay tables are much harder to come by. Bourbon Room looked like it was still open. We were there in the morning/early afternoon, so don’t know for sure, but I thought it was supposed to close in early Feb. We can usually get two or three nights comped there and I have no problem staying and playing just in that resort, despite my otherwise wandering ways.

Finally, I’ve seen folks say they don’t understand why anyone would ever get a timeshare in Vegas when comps are available. Here’s why it works for me. I joined Hilton Grand Vacations a couple of years back. It’s a points based system, not tied to a given week/property. I’m a fairly low roller, but if I concentrate my play each day, I can get some descent comps at V/P and CET. MLife has yet to offer me anything worthwhile despite making gold status in three trips this “Mlife year”. But with my timeshare points, I can make three or four, four night mid-week trips and get one or two bedroom suites behind Flamingo or at Elara. I can hop around all I want without worrying about covering comps. Elara is a top-notch hotel, on a par with most of the nicer places on the strip and the Flamingo property is pretty nice as well. This works great for my family because I like to take my daughter and there’s no way my play would rate a suite at any property. So while not for everyone, it works well for my style and needs right now.

Thanks to everyone for following along and the encouragement along the way. Doing the TR was a lot of fun. We had a great time on this trip and hope you enjoyed as well.
