    I will start with Texas.

We had a governor -- Jim Hogg. He named his daughter Ima. The story was he also had a daughter named Ura. That proved to be an urban legend. But Ima Hogg was a real person.

We had a governor James Ferguson. He served from 1915-1917. He was convicted of misapplication of public funds and receiving a bribe. The Texas Senate impeached him and he was not allowed to hold a political office again.

His wife Miriam ran for governor in 1925 and won. She was called Ma Ferguson. She served until 1927 and then ran again and won in 1933. Her husband the ex-governor was the First Gentleman of Texas. Ma Ferguson was quoted as saying it was 2 for 1 as she implemented her husband's policies.

She also pardoned over 4000 people which is why they took the power of pardons away from the Governor of Texas. He can grant clemency with a recommendation of a pardons board. Although it had not been proven, many said that she sold the pardons for money.

Just thought these were interesting facts.

LBJ lost his 1948 senate election by 20,000 votes after recounts etc he amazingly won by 87 votes. It used to be taught in Texas schools that one county in Texas had more people vote than were alive. It is alleged that people in cemeteries voted for LBJ. The ballot box from the county in Texas where this "allegedly" occurred was never turned in. This was from a Texas Monthly article from 1998. How different things may have been if LBJ had lost that senate race.

if LBJ had lost that Senate race, he would not (?) have become President, and then maybe we could have won the Vietnam war?

Not starting a flame war, just thinking out loud......................................

I have read a lot of Vietnam war books (non-fiction) as this war fascinated me, and most of them (without a political agenda at all) blamed LBJ for losing this war due to his policies on how we were to fight this war.................

    Flame away!!

A little more recent tale, with perhaps greater implications:

A vacant senate seat in Illinois in 2004 was filled by an unknown black man, Barack Obama. The legend himself, Mike Ditka was approached about running for this seat and declined. Ditka, a beloved legend (and outspoken critic of President Obama) in the state of Illinois, certainly would have defeated Obama. Had this occurred, Obama wouldn't have become President, erasing 8 years of Presidential history. Crazy.

Those were talented writers you found. Its extremely difficult to talk about, let alone write a book abt war that is apolitical. I'd be curious to to know what winning the war would have looked like. What policies did they disagree with? Did the authors want to mine Hanoi Harbor? Use nukes? We did kill... no one really knows... btw a million and 1.5 million NVA, Viet Cong and northern civilians. That's a lotta dead.

Conventional armies don't win guerrilla wars. Hell, look at Korea and WWI, mano a mano doesn't win wars. What wins wars is smashing the shit out of an industrialized nation's productivity, citizens and morale, then burning the rest of it. Ask Germany and Japan. That wouldn't and didn't work on the NVA/VC. LBT was a deer in the headlights, finding himself in a place he didn't want to be and not sure if the nation wanted him to stand and take it or try to leap. He also was trying to figure out how to deal with the South and build a Great Society.

CD...a very common perception is that Johnson (and McNamara) intentionally prolonged the war in order to keep "the war machine" humming...which kept political contributions flowing.
I'm not saying it's true...but an awful lot of people think it is.
Needless to say, the nearly 50,000 of our own dead was certainly a heavy price to pay. Sure would've been nice if North Vietnam hadn't decided to invade its southern neighbor.

Hard to fight what you can't see or hear but you know is completely surrounding you.

That applies to Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

It's also pretty damned philosophical for this time of day.
