My GF and I just returned from a 7* trip to LV. The flight and room was comped, along with a $500 folio that could be used to charge food, etc. We charged the Pitbull tix, along with several meals, which totaled $789, so there was $289 in excess room charges. I was given the option of paying that using my reward credits or my credit card. I voted for neither and asked to speak to a host on duty.

I politely asked the host if she could give me a discretionary comp. She hemmed and hawed and said that they do not offer discretionary comps if the customer has a reward credit balance; they can only take it out of the RC first, and if there's none left, then they can consider a discretionary comp. This was something that I already knew but figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a try, and was almost resigned to give in and say "ok, whatever".

But the host then asked if my GF had her own Total Rewards account. I said yes, but explained that she's only a Gold tier, with about 3,120 in tier credits and about $12 worth of reward credits. The host said "Perfect", that's exactly what she was looking for. I was puzzled until the host explained that she could apply $199 of the $289 excess to my GF's TR account, use up the 1200 in RC and deduct the rest ($187) as a discretionary comp since my GF has no more reward credits. This way, I would only have to use about 9000 of my own reward credits for the remaining balance (289-199=90).

This was not something that I had thought of and wanted to pass this along those who travel together and have their own individual TR accounts and one account has significantly less RC than the other.

as a 7* and with only $789 of total charges, I feel that you shouldn't have to pay for anything anyway. That they were actually trying to charge you is ridiculous.

I'm not saying that this is the OPs situation but........

Not all 7 Star players are created equally. A lot of CET players are frequency players at their local CET casino and make 7 Stars not by being a big player, but by going often. I've heard of 7 Star players doing their 7 Star retreat in Vegas (airfare, hotel, limos $500 resort credit) and not giving CET any action. Their home casino is a local so the no play trip doesn't impact their offers at their local. The retreat is earned by being a 7 Star player, so there really is no gambling obligation.

I guess my point is that being a 7 Star player doesn't necessarily guarantee that you don't pay for anything.

Good point. After my recent whirlwind tour I also confirmed with my Las Vegas host that they only care about your Las Vegas ADT. I don't play at locals typically but according to him your history in Las Vegas is the only thing that matters to them.

Newmans this actually brings up a question I have. My birthday is coming up (April 11) and I'm buying a new car in the next few weeks. I thought a great way to celebrate both things would be to take a 4 hour drive to Windsor. However, it's only a month before my Vegas trip and I don't want to spend a ton while I'm in Windsor. I have never been but I checked online and would be comp'd the room up front. If I go and only earn, let's say 500 Tier Credits, over the trip (monday night/tuesday morning) would that affect my Vegas offers?

Nope, it won't affect your Vegas offers. Your offers are based on your ADT within a market. Your play in Windsor won't matter to Vegas.
I've played in AC,Windsor, New Orleans, and Cleveland with CET. None of that play impacts Vegas. I play much bigger in Vegas than other markets and my offers there reflect that.

That's what I thought, but the fact that Windsor was comp-ing me nights without ever having been there made me wonder. Good to know!!

You're probably comped at a lot of CET properties that you've never been to. If you go on a comp and low or no play, your future offers there will be affected. Vegas is my primary, so I don't really care about other properties.
