How much time do you actually spend awake in your room on a typical trip? As a low roller, we are happy with a comped room for three nights. It is basically a place to store our stuff and crash for the night. During the day we might make one trip back to drop off stuff or lock up part of the winnings in the safe or take a nap. I would guess we are in our room awake for less than an hour a day. I guess if we went more often or longer trips we might spend more time in the room.

in the room awake - ? Just long enough to shower and get back to the casino. Probably the most time I spend awake in the room is when taking a steam shower in the morning, and before we go to dinner in the evening.

This is one of those things that's constantly debated. Do you really need a big suite/villa? Isn't a bed just enough?

I think a lot of it depends on how you do Vegas. Personally I'll spend a couple hours some days just hanging out in the mornings.

There's also the traveling companion issue. My wife generally gets up earlier than me so having a separate living area is key for her to be able to order some coffee and read or whatever.

Then there's the get together factor. If you have several people in town together it's really nice to have a party area with chairs and sofas to hang out and drink and talk late after the club or restaurant.

Then there's also the amenity factor. The steamshower is a large part of my Vegas experience. Other things like a pool table or foosball or a wet bar to make drinks etc also come in handy.

So although I agree that most of the large suites/villas are excessively large (do my buddy and I really need 4500 sq ft?), they're not all just for show depending on how you roll.

I think the answer to the question for me is intrinsically linked to the quality of the hotel room. Some of the darker, older, cheaper CET properties I frequented before making the step up financially were not conducive to "hanging out" in but even the bottom of the rung Cosmo room is nice to sit in the chair and admire the view.

Up to a couple hours in the morning when we get up and get ready (amount of time is directly proportional to hangover) and then just drop bys after that except for sleeping.

Last trip, hubs and mine and his buddies did hang out in our room (Terrace Suite at Cosmo) for a while, but I think that was a first. I went to bed before them that night. (Also a first) ; )

If I were in a basic Flamingo room or similar I probably wouldn't be in it much either.
It is a function of how you choose to do, or are able to do Vegas.
I get Tower Suite rooms at Wynn or Corner Suites at Aria comped but I actually choose to stay in Salons or Parlors or Penthouses just for some of the reasons Shifter mentioned. And I, or my wife and I have meals, drink Champagne looking at the city lights etc.
This past trip I was in an Aria PH that I paid for but got a round at Shadow comped and Bar Masa and Herringbone also.
    So I traded dollars.
I still would have paid for the room regardless however.
The nicer room is conducive to a more positive mental state which makes for a more enjoyable visit.
I didn't work for what I now have to not enjoy it.

I love to entertain and have friends in the suite for drinks, finger food or whatever and to just hang out. I actually do spend some time in the room and that's why I love a bigger room/suite.

Most of the time I'm traveling solo, so a regular room would technically suit me. However I've grown very accustomed to the amenities offered in the suites. The service for one is hands down in another league for the most part. Then they throw in steam showers and it makes it very hard to go back.
