Mowing the grass is fun, but now that I live in California, it seems people pay for this.

Why would they give away money and miss the fun.

Anyone else like to mow grass, and drink a cold Dr. Pepper afterwards?

No. it's not worth the $65 / month to keep up your own yard. My free time is worth more than that.

About two years ago we switched to artificial grass. It was a good move given the water issues in California.

Wow....that's seems like a bargain. My yard was 50'x135' and I was paying $100.......and I had a lot of garden, it wasn't all lawn.

    Interesting first post.

I/we handle the landscaping -- ornamentals, trees, shrubs -- and raised beds, but Gerardo cuts twice a month and charges 40 bucks. Done deal. I think one of these eons we'll terrace that frontscape, nuke the grass and go sympathetic with our backyard selections. We also have a twice-a-month housekeeper and the ex-cons with no teeth at the carwash handle that task.

When we bought our last place it had 12,000 s.f. of turf. I mowed it twice by hand. There wasn't a blade of grass anywhere in the yard not long after that.

    never.

had a yard guy since I bought my first house.

after you buy a riding mower and trimmer and maintain/repair them and all the time you spend, it's cheaper to pay somebody.

California has a ton of landscape maintenence companies. They trip over each other for business. Lots of cheap labor also helps keep costs down.

I have a half-acre lawn - mostly St. Augustine...ever since my sons left for college, I've been mowing it myself. Honda self-propelled push-mower... but I'm getting to the age that I may have to look at contracting this out.

No Dr. Pepper...but typically I'll have a Miller Lite (16-oz) after I'm done... (it's my favorite argument to those who always slam "light beer": Which would you prefer after mowing half an acre on a 100-degree day? A dark ale or a Miller Lite? The argument usually makes the point!)
