I've been following a discussion about getting the bus downtown on another site and I just don't understand how the mentality of being that "frugal" can go together with enjoying yourself in a place like Vegas? Anyone got any insight?

Honestly, I might take the bus downtown from the airport if it was there when I got off the plane and wasn't much slower than a taxi. However, there are people on there who will wait around for the fucking thing.

Being overly "frugal" is a good way to ruin a Vegas trip. I have been on a couple trips with folks who spent more than they should and it ruined their time and they haven't been back to LV.

So I agree that I have never made the LV/frugal vac connection. It can be what you make of it I suppose but its still a vacation of excess and indulgence to me and as I have said before you are essentially playing with money for the purpose of entertainment.

I am just going to throw an idea out there. I think doing stuff like taking the bus, trading coupons, etc allows them to make a vegas vacation possible. While I would never think about taking a bus if that was the only way I could afford to do a trip I might reconsider.

That's all cool, but when it becomes an inconvenience would you still take the bus rather than spring for another ten bucks?

I never understood it but to some extent the other board glorifies it. In Vegas, one sees it all the time. A guy betting a $100 hand but stiffing the waitress for his/her drinks. People wasting hours taking convoluted bus routes or shuttles to visit another casino or to get to their hotel. I think we all like a good deal. However, if I'm doing something just to save a few bucks but it will negatively impact by vacation, I will not do it.

Reading about someone's ability to use all their coupons from the casino book is the seventh circle of hell to me.

I think a lot of people do these kind of things everyday in their normal lives. We see it as an inconvenience but to them it's normal. Like I said I'm just guessing.

My second trip I was long hauled downtown, it pissed me off. It was my wife's birthday so I let it go, but I set up a rental car for the rest of the trip. I rode the express to the airport, then the shuttle to get the rental. It took about an hour and fifteen minutes total and two bucks, and I was back downtown.
I have always rented since then, but I can understand why people use it. It runs every half hour for most of the day, and hourly otherwise. And it's fast, 20-25 minutes tops. And I bet we drag our luggage further at MGM, Aria and Mirage, then the furthest place downtown.
As far as the convoluted bus and shuttle rides to get around...........no fucking way.

To each their own. I agree with Ron. If going "frugal" lets you do a Vegas vacation and you can enjoy it on the cheap....knock yourself out.
For me, I don't take the bus at home, so I'm not taking the bus on vacation. I'm on vacay and I'm (or my host) going to spoil myself a bit.

I have done the most frugal trip known to man for Vegas I think, free flights due to being bumped on a different flight, stayed at the IP for $11 a night, no resort fee, had a rental car for $36 total for 3 nights, and brought $200 cash for everything else. I have also done trips like one of my recent ones, penthouse suite at Mirage, limo to and from, ate at Gordon Ramsey Steak, had a 10k gambling budget. I was very poor during the frugal trip and couldn't do it now, but at the time it was the only way we could afford to go on a vacation so it was better than sitting home.

The over supply of hotel rooms cause the prices to be very cheap, especially mid week. Using Hotels.com most weeks you can stay at MGM for the same price as a Hilton Garden Inn in your area. Downtown Vegas or off strip places are even less. To help get traffic in the downtown or off strip joints have a cheap menu item. Throw in a food court or other cheap meal and you can eat for $25 a day. Now throw in a decent bj game at $5 minimum with the free drinks at the table, your getting drunk for about $20 with the chance of winning.

Either this is all they can afford so they have to do this, they love being frugal, or they need every possible dollar for gambling.
