My husband and I have traveled to Vegas about 2 times a year for the last 6 years. He wanted to take a road trip with our 9 year old Grandson.

Originally he also insisted on taking our two mini doxies. Thankfully he wised up. They do not travel well so we ended up kenneling them. However, most of my travel arrangements were prepaid on the assumption we were taking our dogs. It is a challenge finding pet friendly hotels that don't charge you out the ying yang for bringing dogs.

Needless to say we slummed it on the lower class end.

We live in central Texas and we drove to Clovis, NM the first day. One may ask what is in Clovis?? Absolutely nothing. In fact once we got out of the Texas hill country at Brady, Texas it is flat and ugly. We drove for 8 stinking hours and 6 of those hours has to be the ugliest drive in the whole USA. Seven of those hours and we were still in Texas.

I love my state. Sometimes it is just too f**ing big. We stopped along the way at rest areas to eat the first couple of days. Texas has great rest areas. Clean, sparkly, visitor info that looks like a mini museum. We also have a highway system that takes care of its roads.

New Mexico your roads suck. I don't know what NM does with all their money they collect from Gas sales tax. But I am sure it is not used on their roads or rest areas. I'm also pretty sure I have contracted some drug resistant bacteria from the bathroom at the rest area in New Mexico.

Back to Clovis. We stayed there because my husband wanted to see AGAIN-- Billy the Kid's gravesite and the Billy the Kid museum. Clovis is one town over from Fort Sumner. We stayed at the 5 star Econolodge- it was like a ghetto, barrio, trailer park all rolled up in one. The room was not that bad and it was quiet considering the looks of their clientele. Words cannot describe what we saw the next morning at the free continental breakfast buffet. Ok. One word --Deliverance.

From there we traveled up to Albuquerque and stopped at Sandia Peak Tram. $65 for all 3 to ride up. A little pricey but the views were great.

The drive from Clovis to Albuquerque also sucked when it comes to scenery. Albuquerque is beautiful. From there we drove to Durango- probably one of the most beautiful places ever.

We are still here -- we went on the train yesterday- my grandson absolutely loved it. We went to Purgatory ski area for summer activities and he loved that too. Alpine slide, bunjee trampoline, scenic lift. I'll post some pics later.

We are staying at Iron Horse Inn- Twenty years ago or so it was probably pretty nice- but again arrangements were made to accommodate the dogs. It is dated but clean and the view right outside our door is spectacular.

I'll post the view and post some other pics later

I know this is boring -- no casino gambling etc. But if you want a good vacation for kids there is plenty to do here

Sounds great I wish I could get the husband to go. Last night we ate Taco Bell--sometimes it is just easier to let him have his way. I am pretty sure I saw Rice Monkeys. Maybe I can sneak out while he takes a nap.

Up on Sandia peak-- these are from my phone and Grandson took. I have better ones on my camera. Can't download until I get home.

Durango-Silverton train ride. 3 1/2 hours each way. It was long. I should have opted to go one way and take a bus back.

I might do the Durango next year with the 3 kids. I am taking them on their first 'semi-cross country road trip' from the Twin Cities to Vegas for the little ones 5th birthday bash. Interstate 35 to Interstate 70 and then west to 15. Might do the south detour to Durango for a day??? Any tips on where to stay and catering to the 4 and two 10 year olds???

They would love the train ride. But like I posted I think I would do the one way and take the bus back. It was so long. We went to Purgatory ski area yesterday. Grandson had a blast.

Bunjee trampoline. I saw very young kids probably 4 years old doing this. Flipping and having a blast

All three of them are daredevils in their own rights, they are not scared of anything. The girl just did a huge rock climbing wall and made it to the top and then they bungeed her down. It was huge and she had zero experience and the attendant said almost no one under a teen makes it to the top the very first time. I am planning this now, thanks for bringing it to my attention. Hotel recommendations?
