Of course this was going to happen. Once MGM did it, everyone in town has to do it.

If you have a choice of free parking close by or paying for parking, where would you park? Most will choose the free parking.

So, once Mlife hotels start charging, locals and people without status simply parked elsewhere and walked over. That means customers are parking and taking their dollars elsewhere and creating a burden on parking with neighboring non-Mlife casinos.

In response, the other casinos simply create their own parking fees to discourage this activity.

All non-Mlife and non-CET casinos on the strip will follow in very short order.

Besides Cosmo, I really don't think this was an issue for most CET properties. From your MLife hotel room to an CET property parking garage across the street, you're looking at probably a 20 minute walk each way. I guess it might be worth it if you were coming in for the week and just need a place to park your car until you leave, but to hike to your car each time you wanted to go out seems ridiculous.

I don't doubt people tried this, but I don't think the majority of people would go out of their way for free parking.

You haven't read many boards before if you don't understand the great lengths people will go to to save money in Vegas. Even while staying at the nicest resorts.

On top of that, it happens quite often that you leave your car somewhere other than the resort you're staying at.

Everyone seems to be forgetting the masses. We're talking about the drones that couldn't tell you the difference between a players club and diners club. The drunken fools with the 128 oz margs around their necks. Do any of you think that they could point out which properties are CET or MGM or which charge for parking and which don't?

The bottom line is that we we're fortunate to have enjoyed free valet parking at 5 star Las Vegas resorts for years. The last time I parked in Boston at the Hilton Back Bay, it was $40 and at the Millennium Hilton in NYC it was $55. Vegas is a bargain.

I'll agree with your second statement, but I still believe that the more frugal people who would attempt this is a much smaller group than you think.

    Speaking of valet...

I valeted at the mall on Black Friday and it was $10! That was a freaking steal and I couldn't believe people were fighting to park (Tysons Corner in VA). Gave the valet my phone and he texted me a URL and told me when I was ready to pick it up, just click the link. Clicked the link when we were ready and the car was waiting for us when we got out. Best money I think I've ever spent.

Valet hotel parking in any major city will cost a boatload. Los Angeles, Philly, SF, Denver, NYC, etc.
Las Vegas is just catching up to this added revenue stream. An easy quick way to add to the bottom line. You have to remember that these are corporations that are beholden to the stockholders to produce profits (and protect their bonuses). Their main goal has strayed away from a customer enhanced experience where small benefits are provided at no cost to the guest.

But Las Vegas is different. When you go to downtown Chicago or LA, you generally aren't there to experience the entire city - you're there because you have something specific to do in the city. At most you're going to pay to park at your hotel (if you're visiting from out of town) and then maybe a few times around the city depending on where you need to go.

People that go to Vegas are there to experience the whole strip and don't want to stay in the same building. They want to check things out up and down the strip, and tend to spend money at each place. Free parking has shaped the behavior of Vegas visitors. Someone that drove in from LA staying at Mandalay Bay, that wanted to gamble at Aria, go to the Forum shops at Caesars, then eat at MGM, would typically park at each of those places. With these fees, that simple itinerary might cost $30 in parking fees for them to accomplish, which may well be enough for them to say "I'll just take a nap instead".

These fees will change behavior in ways that are likely to reduce revenue for all involved. People that would have rented a car before for no specific reason other than they might decide to go exploring probably won't, and fewer people will visit properties that are not within walking distance while in town. Is it going to kill Vegas? No, not by itself. But enough of these nagging fees in aggregate might turn enough people off that it starts to affect tourism.

Yep, and add Whistler or Kohala or or or.

People will grouse ... and continue to show up. Familification? Vegas did just fine. 6:5 and short-pay VP? Vegas did just fine. Resort fees? Vegas did just fine. Chill-clubs and "no-value" high-end eats? Vegas did just fine.
