P.S. My hair guy and the gal who does my pedicures, they both get far more than 15 or 20. It's the relationship, and the service rendered.

I have 55 years in this country and I have never been told or read that tipping is a salary backfill.

If it's not a state tax, and it's not mentioned upfront when you sit down how is it legal to add it on?

This is important. At the places I frequent, where they know me, and where they go above and beyond, I'll tip 30%-40%.

I would agree with the majority here, as usual I disagree with Wigwam. If I walked into one of these places, had amazing service and enjoyed my time there, then got the bill with 4.7% that I didn't know about I would be pissed. In fact I would probably ask for a manager and take it out on them a bit for their shady practice. I would however, never take it out on the server and their tip, especially if they were great. Having grown up in the restaurant industry, I would say I like the lower minimum wage for servers, it encourages them to do their job and provide great service or it will effect their bottom line. What I really hated was pompous Europeans who would get amazing service and then not tip because they don't do it back home. That being said for every one of those there was 2 more that were great and tipped because they knew it was customary here. It's the principle for me in that they hide it in the fine print and try to be sneaky about it. I will not go to these places because of that. I will now anxiously await Wigwams rath because I disagreed with his post and thought it was lame.

How would the new CA minimum wage of 15 dollars change things?
