Here in Texas flash flooding and rescues are pretty common. Many times the idiots out there go around the barricades. This story is from Austin. First the mother had to be rescued when her car was swept away. Then her daughter and a friend went back to try and get in the car to get something "important" out (probably meth and a bong) -- and they had to be rescued. You can't fix stupid.

20-year-old Shelby Haney and 22-year-old Marissa Elaine Roberts are facing charges after STAR Flight was called in to rescue them during Thursday's storms. The charges cap off what turned out to be a very busy and potentially dangerous night for first responders.

STAR Flight was called out to Bitting School Road in Elgin on two different occasions Thursday.

The first was to save a woman whose car was swept away at a low-water crossing. First responders then put barricades went up to stop anyone else from traveling on the road. A few hours later the woman's daughter and her friend went back to the car to get something out of it. STAR Flight was called out to rescue them.

Two women face jail time after STAR Flight rescue
STAR Flight paramedic Brian Hoffower and his crew were called out four different times on Thursday night, they rescued six people, including Haney and Roberts.

"What we found was one victim stranded on the road, but surrounded by swift water, and unable to get out. The second victim was holding onto a pole in the middle of some pretty fast moving swift water," Hoffower said.

Roger Wade, of the Travis County Sheriff's Office, explains how they got there.

"They decided it was imperative that they get some items out of a car (that was swept away by fast-moving water) so they went back around the barricades and tried to get into the car. At that point they had to be rescued," he said.

Haney and Roberts are now being charged with a crime.

"We want you to understand that when we put up barricades, it is to keep you safe, don't drive around them, and if we can't get that message across with the barricade, we will do it with a summons and filing charges," Wade said.

Charges that police hope will send a message.

I don't know if this is common in other parts of the country. But like you said, it sure is pretty common around Texas. San Antonio had a few last week as well.

I try not judge people in these situations for three reasons.

    1. When your car gets swept away I'm sure your brain goes a bit bananas.
    2. Common sense isn't that common but that's not a crime.
    3. Humans make mistakes and I'd rather not be judged the next time I make one. Even the most intelligent people on the planet have at some time performed a stupid action or two.

Lol. I judge the fuck out of them. They were dumb and getting charged with a crime is the right thing. And a heavy fine.

Haha. That's entirely up to you. I judge stupidity by different things is all it seems.

I'm not wrong because I haven't offered an opinion. I said I try not to judge people who do stupid things because there are usually some factors that cause it to happen.

It was the daughter who ignored the barricades to try to get back to the car-- She not only endangers her life but that of the rescue tram.

True, but what she's guilty of is not thinking. I doubt she would have done it if she realised she was risking hers or anyone else's life.

I have sympathy with momentary loss of clear thought. I find it more stupid when someone hammers their fingers. Why would you put your hand somewhere that you are about to hit with a piece of metal.
