My personal accounting formula for a "winning" trip is: cash I'm leaving with, minus cash I brought, minus the money I spent while on the trip. This means you can have two types of "winning trips." The really good kind is when you win enough that you get a totally free trip (i.e. won $2000 but spent $1000 on the hotel/food/flight/etc.). The other is where you end up a winner from gambling but the trip still cost you something (i.e. won $500 but spent $1000).

Comps, freeplay, etc. obviously reduce your expenses and move the second type of trip closer to the first. Therefore, there is a zone where free stuff puts you over the edge between the second and first types. High rollers generate the theo to make this happen on all their winning trips. For them, just about all their winners are the first type.

For most people though, that zone is pretty narrow, because we get so much less free stuff. Our best strategy is to keep our own, controllable, expenses down. Easier said than done for me! Since I'm no longer vacationing solo, and our tastes in food and hotel amenities have "evolved" over the years, any winning trips I have these days are invariably the second type.

That's purely in economic terms though. If you had a good time, that's a winning trip no matter what happens gambling!

No, it was remarkably easy to get where we went. We parked near signs for Fletcher Canyon Trail. Probably no more than 45 minutes from the Strip. There was snow along the side of the road once we got to a certain point, but the roads themselves were clear and dry.

 

Thanks! Are you the one who always goes there? I want to say someone on this board goes there every trip, but I can't recall who it is. (And it was awesome!)

 

Just miised you M! I was there over the prior weekend and golfed 2 rounds at Shadow by myself. We'll hook up out there one of these days..............
