No problem if you can't find it again, it just piqued my interest because I have been looking for it for a few years on and off and have yet to find it. Thanks for looking.

My experience has been that with a face upcard, they check sideways for the ace markings on the perimeter of the card. The 10JQK markings won't show in that direction so the dealer only knows that it's not a dealer A hole card, so no blackjack.

Likewise, with an A upcard, they check straight ahead, looking for the perimeter markings that are only on the 10JQK cards. Therefore they only know that there's no dealer blackjack and are left unable to signal players (unintentional non verbals included) one way or the other.

    Am I off on this?

You're correct, unless it's a very old casino where they don't have the peek devices (I don't think any casinos on the strip fall into this category). One way you might be able to take advantage of hole card issues is if you play at tables with the peek device where they press a button for the A or 10 and it turns red or green instead of the mirror-based ones. These things were costing them big when they malfunctioned.

I was once playing in the Mansion at the MGM and one of those was malfunctioning (I believe they've since gotten rid of these in favor of the mirror devices in there). In the course of an hour, the dealer flipped up her hole card after being told she had a blackjack (but didn't) 3 times, and the pit boss was being very deferential - she gave me the option whether to play out the hand or call it a misdeal each time after I saw the dealer's hole card (it pays to be very nice to floor people - when their discretion is involved, it will always work in your favor to have them on your side). She also called it a misdeal on a $10k bet that she shouldn't have...when the light turned green and let me draw, but the dealer actually had a blackjack. She should have just said "sorry, dealer had blackjack, you would have lost anyway" but instead just had her leave my bet and clear the cards. In total in 1 hour, that malfunctioning device cost them about $50k in bets that I would have either lost and instead won, or was able to bail out of with a misdeal after seeing the dealer's hole card. I would have played on that table all night, but surveillance finally had enough and called down to close the table until the device was fixed.

Fun article. Thanks for sharing. Seemed legit enough to me. Though my favorite part was the end where she says she's going to make over 100k this yr playing BJ, poker and sports betting after using the preceding few paragraphs detailing what a horrible gambler she had become and counting all the money she lost. Had no idea it was that easy.

I was thinking specifically about the El Cortez... but I've also seen it at other smaller places that actually look at the card... Those have included (over the years): Barbary Coast; Westward Ho; Circus; the Riv; O'Sheas; LVC; Plaza and even Fremont/Cal/MSS.
It may not be a viable tell too much anymore, but it sure has been in the past.
For me, it's certainly more common than a dealer revealing the hole-card to players.

Very interesting! I know the dealer Jin at the MGM. She deals in the mansion. What is the interesting part is that she now wears a name tag with a different name on it. When she came to my table last time I noticed the new name tag and called her out on it. She shrugged it off with some excuse as to why she was wearing a different name tag. Wish I knew about this before!

Lol that's funny...I'm sure some MGM execs have seen this story (it's been floating around for years). They were probably like "yeah, let's make sure she can't be identified". Although apparently she's on Baccarat now which is for all intents and purposes unbeatable and has no hole card issues, so she'll be fine. She can flash those cards all she wants as they come out of the shoe.

Pretty sure that site's fake. I actually ran a site exactly like that for a while early in my Internet marketing career. That's OK, thanks for trying.
