Would make no sense. Yet, some people think it is a good idea.

I can't imagine doing Vegas without a nice stack of 100s.

Got a link that doesn't need a subscription?

At a more meta level, we are moving towards a cashless society. I don't know when it will happen but I expect it will be in my lifetime.

LV is the only time I carry a large amount of cash. We just came back from two weeks in Jamaica and I hated the burden of using cash daily. Its dirty, tough to manage when dark and drinking and just something I have transitioned away from over they years I guess.

The lack of large bills was the most frustrating thing for me when I was in China. Their biggest banknote is ¥100, which is basically like a US$20 in that it's a pretty average price for things. Needed to carry tons of them.

Any gov't hates cash because they can't track it and ensure they get their tax money if you get paid in cash and keep it under your mattress.

Making bills smaller just makes it more difficult to use it as a primary transaction source and will encourage more people to move to banks where they can control it.

Or possibly steal it a la Greece...

Sorry about that. Posted it from my Facebook feed late last night. Here is a better link:

I think Summers fails to appreciate how important the US $100 bill is to global currency. When other countries' monetary systems fail, US bills like the $100 can be counted on.

If the US didn't fill this role, who would? China? Russia? English pound?

you're 70 years too late. they used to have all the big bills until they stopped printing them in 1945.

"And he is equally correct in arguing that technology is obviating whatever need there may ever have been for high denomination notes in legal commerce"

This was my first thought even before I read the article. There's very little reason to carry around large amounts of cash unless you're doing something that you probably shouldn't be doing.

I remember watching the television show "Lottery!" when I was growing up in the 80s. They always gave the winners they tracked down 5 crisp $1k bills. I always thought that was cool.
