That's a good site for that piece Shifter.
To so many people the whole comp and theo concept is like airline price and miles accumulated structure.
The chip stack photo was a great insert.

Great article Shifter. Perhaps you could translate it into a sticky post for the comps section. It would probably answer a lot of question that are likely to be asked.

Edit: I just realized this WAS stickied in the comp section. Nothing to see here.

Question - so does your buy in and/or win/loss amount have any influence on your comps? I ask because all the times I've ever played table games, I have often seen the pit boss come over to the dealer and ask "how much did he buy in?", or "he walked away with xxx, right?"....then he usually goes back and types into his little computer screen. I assume this also has to have some sort of influence on your rating?

    Great article. Thanks for authoring/posting.

One question... how does the conversation in point 3 work? Me: "What was my rating for this session?" Him: "$150 for 2.5 hours" Me: ?

What do I say here? "Hey how bout making that three hours cause I'm awesome?" Every time I'm in that situation it just sounds cheesy. What would be the correct approach?

This doesn't actually change your theo rating or anything else. The reason they track this is to try and track what your win/loss is and to track the chips to a certain extent. If you see a player that is constantly weaseling away chips and he finally walks away from the table, there's a good chance that the discrepancy in his count will be given to that player. While theo is used for comps, actual loss can be as well and as Shifter and others have pointed out before, while theo is great, actual loss is where they make their money. The buy-in/cash out is to help track this win/loss although there's human error in this as well just as there is in theo ratings.

To this point, you point out that maybe you pressed your bets some more, or just ask him to bump up the amount a bit to $170 or something. They aren't going to change the time, but the amount bet is what is being asked to be changed. A lot of times if you say 'that seems a bit low' they'll say 'what do you think it should be?' Then you give your reasoning of why it should be a bit higher than they'll likely bump it up some, possibly even more than you asked for.
